NAAS 2023 Conference

“Crisis and Turns: Continuities and Discontinuities in American Culture.”
The Nordic Association for American Studies held its biannual conference, co-organized by SAAS and SINAS, in Uppsala, Sweden.

SAAS Conference 2022

The Swedish Association for American Studies (SAAS) held its 11th conference in Örebro from mid-day October 6 to the afternoon of October 7, 2022. See the conference program for more information. Daniel Kane, professor of American literature at Uppsala University held a plenary lecture. Two thematic roundtable sessions were held: Archipelagic American Studies and The More-than-Human in/and American Studies

The Swedish Association for American Studies together with The Swedish Institute for North America Studies (SINAS), Uppsala University, and The Nordic Association for American Studies (NAAS)  welcomed scholars to an afternoon of engaged discussion.

2019 SAAS Graduate Student Workshop

On October 4–5, 2019, SAAS together with SINAS at Uppsala University arranged a Graduate Student Workshop at Stockholm University. The workshop was open to all PhD Students affiliated with a university in Sweden. The purpose of the workshop was twofold: to give students the chance of presenting their research and receive feedback from senior academics and other scholars, as well as to develop doctoral students’ awareness and knowledge of American Studies as a research field.

NAAS 2019 – The 26th Biennial Conference of the Nordic Association for American Studies

The twenty-sixth biennial conference of the Nordic Association for American Studies (NAAS) took place in Bergen, Norway, on 25–27 April 2019. See the conference website for more information and the program.

SAAS Co-Sponsored Seminar – Uppsala, Sweden, March 7, 2019

On March 7, 2019, at 13.15–15.00 SAAS co-sponsored a seminar with Stefan Eklöf Amirell, Associate Professor of History at Linnaeus University. Professor Amirell presented a paper titled “Intermediaries in Imperial Expansion: Connections and Encounters on the U.S. Frontiers, 1876–1916.” The seminar was arranged by SINAS at Uppsala University.

SAAS Co-Sponsored Seminar – Uppsala, Sweden, November 15, 2018

On November 15, 2018, SAAS co-sponsored a panel discussion about the U.S. midterm elections at Uppsala University, titled “What Happened? The United States after the Mid-Terms.” The panel featured Mark Weiner (Rutgers University/Uppsala University), Peter Dahlen (American Chamber of Commerce in Sweden), and Frida Stranne (Halmstad University). Dag Blanck (Uppsala University) served as the moderator. The panel was a collaboration between Utrikespolitiska föreningen i Uppsala, SINAS at Uppsala University, and SAAS. For more information, see SINAS website.

SAAS 2018 – The 10th Biennial Conference of the Swedish Association for American Studies

The Swedish Association for American Studies (SAAS) held its 10th biennial conference in Stockholm on September 28–30, 2018. See  the conference website and the conference program for more information.

SAAS Roundtable – “The End of the American Century? A Panel on History, Politics, and the U.S. Role in the World.”
As part of the 2018 conference, SAAS organized a public panel discussion on U.S. history and politics, on September 30, 2018, at the ABF House, Sveavägen 41, in Stockholm. The panel was moderated by Frida Beckman (Stockholm University) and the discussants were Dag Blanck (Uppsala University), David Roediger (University of Kansas), and Frida Stranne (Halmstad University).

SAAS Co-Sponsored Seminar – Uppsala, Sweden, 5 December 2017

SAAS is co-sponsoring a seminar with Fredrik Logevall, professor of history and international affairs at Harvard University. The seminar, titled ”Making Sense of the Vietnam War,” is arranged at the Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS), and will be held at Uppsala University on December 5, 2017. NAAS 2017 – The 25th Biennial Conference of the Nordic Association for American Studies
