"Americas multiply in memories and fancies," Felipe Fernandez-Armesto writes in the introduction to The Americas: A Hemispheric History. The plurality and multidimensionality of America/the Americas and American Studies - social, cultural, political, geographical, mythological America/s appearing in interpretative international, transnational and interdisciplinary American studies - are at the forefront in the conference Global Americas, which The Swedish Association for American Studies is pleased to announce at the Department of Humanities, Mid Sweden University, Härnösand, on September 17-18, 2010.
The conference will feature plenary speakers (Roland Anrup, Gunlög Fur, Donald E. Pease, Erik Åsard, among others), paper sessions and workshops - three to four papers in each. Paper sessions provide the occasion to present individual papers, and workshops gather papers shared by the organizer and the workshop members on a common theme or topic in reference to the conference rubric. Global Americas invites senior and junior scholars in Sweden and Scandinavia for the presentation and exchange of scholarly work, thereby mapping and exploring the range and extent of American Studies.
This is a first call to invite topics for workshops and individual papers. Proposals, written in English, should include a 200-word abstract, clearly outlining the objectives the workshop, or the paper. Please include author/s, institutional affiliation (university and department), mailing address, email address, fax and phone number.
Please send proposals to Anders Olsson, Department of Humanities, Mid Sweden University, SE-871 88, HÄRNÖSAND, SWEDEN, Anders.Olsson@miun.se, phone +46 611 86162, cell phone +46 70-2527644, fax +46 611 861 70, no later than January 15, 2010. Proposals may be submitted electronically or in paper version. Authors will be informed of acceptance by March 15, 2010. Further details pertaining to the conference program and to accommodations will be available in spring 2010.
